I recently produced a video clip demonstrating the specific and unique way Brazilian samba rhythms are authentically phrased. First, it is important to understand the origin of this particular “swing.” The tamborim, a percussion instrument typical of any batucada, serves as a perfect example to illustrate this: the swing arises naturally from the specific technique used to play the instrument. This phrasing is first transferred to the snare drum using both hands, then practiced with each hand individually; once that is mastered, one hand is free to play additional rhythms.
